Oliver Bearman's rapid rise in Formula 1 is a story of talent meeting opportunity. Since joining the prestigious Ferrari Driver Academy in 2021, the young Briton has been marked as a future star, a promise he began to fulfill with a Haas FP1 outing in Mexico City in 2023.
But every driver needs a breakthrough, and for Bearman, it came in the most dramatic fashion. Speaking on the Up to Speed podcast, he revealed a profound debt of gratitude to Carlos Sainz. In 2024, Sainz's sudden appendicitis ahead of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix thrust Bearman, then Ferrari's reserve driver, into the spotlight.
With barely any notice, the teenager became the youngest driver ever to race for the Scuderia. He seized the moment with a stunning performance, qualifying 11th and finishing an impressive seventh—ahead of established stars like Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton.
"I will always say to Carlos that I’m in his debt for the rest of my life," Bearman admitted. "Thanks to that, I was able to get my shot and prove I was capable... I don’t know if I would be in F1 without that race."
That standout drive helped pave the way for his full-time Haas seat, where he has continued to grow. His rookie season yielded a solid 41 points, and he has already added 17 more in the current campaign, showing the grit and pace needed to compete at the highest level.
Bearman has been candid about the steep learning curve, acknowledging the immense physical and mental toll of F1. Now in his second season, he appears more comfortable and confident, turning potential into consistent performance and solidifying his place as one of the grid's most exciting young talents.
