Ollie Bearman has opened up about the brutal physical shock he experienced during his surprise Ferrari Formula 1 debut at the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, admitting that his time in Formula 2 left him completely unprepared for the demands of the top tier.

The young British driver was thrust into the spotlight at the last moment, stepping in for Carlos Sainz after the Spaniard underwent emergency appendix surgery. Despite delivering a remarkable performance—finishing seventh and scoring points—Bearman confessed that the physical toll was immediate and intense.

"My first lap in FP3 was like 12 seconds faster than my pole lap in F2 the day before," Bearman recalled in a conversation with Haas teammate Esteban Ocon. "On my first run, my neck was already gone. I was not looking forward to that race, and it hurt."

When Ocon noted that nothing can truly prepare a driver for the strain an F1 car puts on the neck, Bearman agreed wholeheartedly. "Exactly. In F2, it was easy physically—the neck wasn't even a factor. Then I did an F1 race, and my neck was everything. It was a crazy step, but a fun day and a fun night."

Bearman's debut with Ferrari made him the youngest driver ever to compete for the legendary Maranello team. He qualified in 11th, missing Q3 by just 0.036 seconds, and then held off seasoned stars like Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton in the closing stages to secure seventh place. While the 21-year-old stayed calm under pressure, his father had a tougher time watching from the Ferrari garage.

"I couldn't afford to be stressed—I was just trying to hold on with my neck," Bearman said. "For my dad to share that experience, standing at the back of the garage, he was struggling with nerves. But it was very special to share that day with him."

Bearman's impressive performance earned him a full-time seat with Haas, where he continued to shine in his rookie season in 2025. For fans and aspiring drivers, his story is a powerful reminder that the jump from junior categories to F1 is not just about speed—it's about building the strength and endurance to handle the raw power of a Formula 1 machine.
