The Orlando Storm are set for an emotional showdown this Sunday at 4 p.m. when the Birmingham Stallions roll into Inter&Co Stadium. Sitting at 4-1 and tied atop the UFL standings with the DC Defenders, the Storm will face a quarterback who knows their playbook inside and out—Dorian Thompson-Robinson.
Just two weeks ago, DTR was wearing a Storm uniform, battling Jack Plummer for the starting job. Head coach Anthony Becht called the competition "neck-and-neck," noting that either quarterback could have taken the reins. But Plummer won out, completing 70% of his passes over the first four games to lead Orlando to a perfect 4-0 start and cement his role under center.
Rather than let Thompson-Robinson—a "phenomenal talent," according to Becht—waste away on the sidelines, the Storm made a move. They traded DTR to Birmingham in exchange for defensive tackle Amani Bledsoe and quarterback Matt Corral. "I feel like I owe it to DTR to allow him to go play," Becht said after the deal.
And play he did. In his Stallions debut last week, Thompson-Robinson put up 313 passing yards, two touchdowns, and a rushing score, completing 64% of his throws. He also led Birmingham in rushing with 43 yards on four carries. Still, two interceptions contributed to a 45-28 loss to the DC Defenders.
Now comes the intriguing part: DTR knows the Storm's offense and personnel intimately. Becht, however, isn't worried. "He knows us very well, and we know him very well. We got 2-for-1, so we know what they got going on, too," the coach said, hinting at new wrinkles to keep the former teammate guessing.
With playoff positioning on the line and emotions running high, Sunday's matchup promises to be a must-watch battle between a red-hot Storm team and a quarterback looking to prove he belongs with the best.
