The Oklahoma Sooners wrapped up spring ball with an electrifying spring game, and the buzz around Norman is palpable. The first-team offense stole the show, showcasing a dominant running game paired with explosive passing plays that had fans on their feet. On the other side of the ball, the first-team defense flexed its muscle, stifling the second-team offense with ease. But don't sleep on the depth—a few standout second-team players made strong cases for bigger roles come 2026.
Head coach Brent Venables has emphasized a rotation-heavy approach, especially on defense, and the roster is shaping up to be a serious contender. While some position battles won't be settled until fall camp—and might even stretch into the season—the Sooners have built a deep, talented squad ready to compete at a high level. Here's our post-spring depth chart projection.
Quarterback: John Mateer remains the clear starter, but the backup race is heating up. Whitt Newbauer showed poise under pressure in the spring game, handling a tough situation well. He's the primary backup for now and could have an early edge for the starting job in 2027. Don't write off Bowe Bentley, though—his raw talent and playmaking ability are exactly what Oklahoma saw when they recruited him out of high school.
Running Back: This was one of the biggest question marks heading into spring, and while questions remain, they're now good ones. Even without Xavier Robinson and Tory Blaylock practicing, the running game didn't miss a beat. Lloyd Avant, DeZephen Walker, and Jonathan Hatton all had impressive springs, with Avant earning the start in the spring game. Expect Robinson and Blaylock to rejoin the mix in fall camp, and keep an eye on the possibility that Walker and Hatton could redshirt. This will be one of the most competitive battles in camp, and we anticipate more shakeups before Week 1.
Wide Receiver: The depth at receiver is as strong as ever. On the outside, Parker Livingstone leads the group, backed by JerMichael Carter and Manny Choice. In the slot, Isaiah Sategna is the go-to target, with Jashiear Rogers and Jacob Jordan providing solid options. Like the running backs, this unit is deep and versatile, ready to make plays in the passing game.
