Oklahoma's Kendall Wells is one home run shy of the college softball single-season record, with postseason play ahead.

In the world of college softball, history is being written one swing at a time—and Oklahoma's Kendall Wells is holding the pen. The 19-year-old freshman catcher is just one home run shy of shattering a legendary single-season record that has stood since 1995.

With 36 homers in 54 games, Wells is chasing the mark set by Arizona's Laura Espinoza, who launched 37 dingers across 72 games nearly three decades ago. What makes this feat even more impressive? A staggering 32 of Oklahoma's games have ended early due to run-rule victories, meaning Wells has had fewer at-bats to make her mark.

And the best part? There's still plenty of softball left on the calendar. The Sooners enter the SEC Tournament as the No. 1 seed after claiming the 2026 regular-season championship, kicking off their postseason run Thursday against either LSU or Georgia. Beyond that lies the NCAA Tournament and a potential trip to the Women's College World Series—plenty of opportunities for Wells to add to her tally.

But as the nation watches this captivating home run race unfold—with UCLA's Megan Grant and Jordan Woolery also in the mix—Oklahoma head coach Patty Gasso has offered some wise counsel to her star freshman.

"Kendall obviously is in this big race that I am not even considering a race," Gasso said ahead of the SEC Tournament. "I just keep telling her... that records are going to be broken, whether it's by you or someone else. So just be you and not try."

Sound advice from a coach who knows a thing or two about winning—and letting greatness happen naturally.
