The Kitchener Rangers are just two wins away from hoisting the J. Ross Robertson Cup after a dramatic overtime victory on home ice Friday night. With a 2-0 series lead in the OHL championship, the Rangers are proving why they're a force to be reckoned with this postseason.
Game two at the Aud was a back-and-forth thriller from the opening puck drop. After taking game one, Kitchener aimed to protect home ice before heading to Barrie. The first period belonged to the visitors, as Brad Gardiner beat Christian Kirsch late in the frame to give the Colts a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
The Rangers responded in the second period when Gabe Chiarot tied things up just past the midway point. But Barrie wasn't done—Ben Wilmott threaded a gorgeous pass to a streaking Emil Hemming, who finished past Kirsch to restore the Colts' lead just over a minute later. That 2-1 scoreline held through the intermission.
The third period brought fireworks. Cole Campbell's shorthanded tally just 28 seconds in tied the game at two, and the tension mounted as regulation wound down. With just 2:26 left, Christian Humphreys unleashed an absolute snipe past Ben Hrebik on the power play, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
But hockey is a game of momentum swings. Just 13 seconds later, Chiarot took a double minor for high-sticking, putting the Colts on a lengthy power play as they pushed for an equalizer. With under 10 seconds to go, a rebound bounced to Kashawn Aitcheson at the side of the net, and he hammered it home to force overtime at 3-3.
The extra frame was all Kitchener. The Rangers fired an incredible 20 shots toward Hrebik in overtime alone. The final one was a Matthew Andonovski one-timer that found the back of the net, sealing a 2-0 series lead as the action shifts to Barrie.
Hrebik was spectacular in defeat, making 55 saves, while Kirsch stopped 30 shots to earn his 14th postseason win. The Colts will look to regroup at home and claw their way back into this championship series.
