Ohio State President Ravi Bellamkonda says he is committed to maintaining all 36 Division I teams, but with a caveat.

Ohio State University President Ravi Bellamkonda has made his stance clear: the Buckeyes are committed to keeping all 36 of their Division I sports programs—but with one important condition.

In a recent sit-down interview, Bellamkonda affirmed his desire to maintain the university's full athletic roster, echoing the promise made by his predecessor, Ted Carter, before Carter's sudden resignation in March. Carter had previously described college athletics as the "front porch" of the university, a core part of its identity and strategic vision.

"We are very committed to the Olympic sports, beyond all of the revenue sports and such," Bellamkonda said. "But like any good leader, you have to be open to other possibilities. I don't see any reason to go away from that mission unless we have to for some reason."

The comment comes at a time of significant upheaval across college athletics. The fallout from the House v. NCAA antitrust lawsuit has led hundreds of Division I programs to shutter or consolidate, with several universities recently cutting men's and women's tennis teams to reallocate funds. For Ohio State, a powerhouse with deep tradition across multiple sports, the pressure to adapt is real.

Bellamkonda's caveat? Performance. He noted that the only factor that would prompt a rethink is if the Buckeyes are "not able to be really good at all the things we do."

"So, as long as we're able to compete and take care of all these sports and do well, our intention is to try to continue that," he added.

For fans of Ohio State's Olympic sports—and for those who love the breadth of college athletics—this commitment is a welcome sign of stability. But it also serves as a reminder that in today's evolving landscape, even the biggest programs must balance ambition with financial reality. Whether you're gearing up for football season or cheering on the track and field team, one thing is certain: the Buckeyes are aiming to compete at the highest level, in every arena.
