Big news out of Happy Valley! The Penn State Nittany Lions have landed a major commitment on the recruiting trail, flipping highly-touted center Egor Shilov from Boston University. This is a game-changing move for the program.
Shilov, an 18-year-old Russian prospect, is projected as a late first-round or early second-round pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft. He currently plays for the Victoriaville Tigres of the QMJHL, where he's been nothing short of dominant. This season, he ranked seventh among all QMJHL skaters and first among rookies in scoring, tallying an impressive 82 points (32 goals, 50 assists) in just 63 games.
But Shilov's game goes beyond the scoresheet. He's a strong puck-handler in the offensive zone, with the vision to make crisp, accurate passes through traffic even under pressure. While not a burner in open ice, he makes smart decisions in transition—whether carrying the puck or setting up a teammate. He may not play an overly physical style, but he's effective in puck battles along the boards and on the forecheck.
Faceoffs are another area where Shilov excels. This season, he took 1,136 draws (eighth in the QMJHL) and won nearly 55% of them, making him a reliable option in key moments and on the power play. His wrist shot is a lethal weapon, but he can also beat goalies with a one-timer or a backhand finish.
Shilov will become just the fourth Russian player in Penn State history, joining Denis Smirnov, Nikita Pavlychev, and Arsenii Sergeev. His arrival timeline is still uncertain—he was originally slated to join Boston University for the 2027-28 season before flipping. If he comes to Penn State for 2026-27, he could fill the roster spot likely left by Gavin McKenna, who is almost certain to head to the NHL.
For Nittany Lions fans, this is a commitment worth celebrating. Shilov brings elite skill, hockey IQ, and a bright future to the blue and white. Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops!
