Oh, Hello: Charlie Michaud Commits to Penn State Hockey

Penn State added an eighth defenseman on Tuesday

Penn State hockey has been busy shoring up its defensive corps, and the Nittany Lions just made a key addition to the blue line. On Tuesday, the program announced the commitment of defenseman Charlie Michaud, giving head coach Guy Gadowsky a full deck of defensemen heading into the 2026-27 season.

Michaud, a 2006-born blueliner from Denver, Colorado, arrives via the transfer portal from Miami (OH). He saw limited action with the Redhawks during the 2025-26 season, appearing in just six games and averaging nearly 13 minutes of ice time without recording a point. However, his game found new life after joining the Penticton Vees of the WHL in late December, where he dished out 15 assists in 35 games—a sign of the puck-moving ability he'll bring to Happy Valley.

With Michaud in the fold, the Nittany Lions now boast an even split of left-handed (Smith, Gadowsky, Fascia, Michaud) and right-handed (Collins, Aman, Herrington, Weber) defensemen, giving the coaching staff plenty of lineup flexibility. This depth is crucial as Penn State looks to build on its recent momentum in the Big Ten.

For now, the roster is full with the current recruiting class and incoming transfers accounted for. But keep an eye on one potential opening: if star forward Gavin McKenna opts for the NHL, a spot will open up, and Penn State is expected to target another forward to round out the lineup. For Nittany Lions fans, this commitment signals that the program is reloading with both balance and intent.
