Offseason Report Card & Prognosis: Anders Lee, unsigned captain

Anders Lee became captain of the New York Islanders at a pivotal moment in franchise history. When he was handed the "C" in 2018, it was with unanimous support from teammates and new head coach Barry Trotz—a much-needed step toward healing after the previous captain's controversial departure. That moment marked a turning point for the organization.

Since then, the Islanders have enjoyed their most successful stretch since the dynasty era (including its buildup and gradual decline). While they haven't raised any championship banners, the results have been impressive compared to what came before. But now, at age 35, Lee's future with the team is uncertain.

Lee has climbed to 10th on the franchise's all-time points list and has become the longest-serving captain in Islanders history. As the public face of the team, he has handled the role with class and consistency. However, the numbers tell a different story. He's coming off his lowest goal output in six seasons, falling just one goal short of the 20-goal mark. For a team looking to retool, Lee represents the only meaningful cap hit that can depart through natural attrition.

Age catches up with everyone—except, perhaps, for musicians who leave the stage at 27. In his first year as general manager, Mathieu Darche has shown a mix of caution and boldness. He traded Noah Dobson rather than committing long-term, but extended physical defenseman Alex Romanov for eight years. Mid-season, Darche took a conservative yet realistic approach with 33-year-old J-G Pageau, signing him to a slight pay cut despite a rising salary cap.

It's reasonable to expect a similar—or even tougher—approach with Lee. He plays a less premium position than Pageau, is a couple of years older, and has lost a step in speed. Lee has been a model soldier for the organization, and it would be a great story for him to join John Tonelli in raising the 27 banner as a one-franchise player and decade-long captain. But for that to happen, he—and his agent—will likely need to adjust their expectations.
