Just when FC Metz thought their fairytale return to Ligue 1 would last, the script has taken a heartbreaking turn. Promoted last season after an unforgettable playoff victory against Stade de Reims, the club from northeastern France is heading straight back down to Ligue 2. It's now official: Metz will be playing in the second division next season.

The crushing blow came this Saturday afternoon at the Stade Saint-Symphorien, where Monaco defeated Les Grenats 1-2 on Matchday 32. With the loss, Metz can no longer mathematically reach 16th place—the spot that would offer a playoff lifeline. Their fate is sealed.

Looking back, the warning signs were there early. The season started with a series of heavy defeats that hinted at a long, painful campaign: a 6-1 thrashing in Lille, a 4-0 loss in Toulouse, and a 5-2 defeat in Monaco. There was a brief flicker of hope in November, when Metz strung together three consecutive wins against RC Lens, FC Nantes, and Nice. But that momentum proved fleeting. After that victory over the Riviera club, Metz simply couldn't find another win in Ligue 1.

The club made a desperate move in late January, parting ways with head coach Stéphane Le Mignan and bringing in Benoît Tavenot to try and turn things around. But the damage was already done. The change in the dugout couldn't spark the revival Metz so desperately needed.

For Monaco, the win was a crucial one. It lifted them above Olympique de Marseille in the standings and pulled them within three points of the podium with just two matches remaining—a significant boost as they push for European qualification.

For Metz, it's back to the drawing board. The question now is whether they can rebuild and make another run at promotion, or if this relegation will mark the beginning of a longer stay in Ligue 2. One thing is certain: after such a rollercoaster season, the club and its fans will be hoping for a steadier ride next time around.
