The 2026 Mountain West Softball Tournament continued with a bang on day three, as tournament host Nevada faced off against regular-season champion Grand Canyon in the winner's bracket final. With Nevada being the only team to take a series from GCU this season, anticipation was high for what promised to be a thrilling matchup.
And it didn't disappoint. From the first pitch, this game was pure offensive fireworks. Nevada struck first in the top of the first inning when Hannah Di Genova launched her 26th home run of the season, putting the Wolf Pack up 1-0. But Grand Canyon answered immediately. A tough break for Nevada's center fielder Bailie Clark turned into an inside-the-park home run for Sydney McCray, knotting the game at one. Pitcher Talia Tretton battled through a couple of walks but escaped the inning with two strikeouts to keep things tied.
The second inning was where things got wild. With two outs and two runners on base, Rylie Haith crushed a three-run homer to left field, giving the Wolf Pack a 4-1 lead. But the Lopes had their own comeback brewing. Pinch hitter Alina Satcher delivered a grand slam to flip the script, putting GCU ahead 5-4. Emily Gonzalez tacked on another run with a single, and just like that, Grand Canyon had turned a 4-1 deficit into a 6-4 lead in a single inning.
Nevada refused to back down. Haylee Engelbrecht drove in a run with a single, though the play was marred by a gruesome ankle injury to Lopes shortstop Mackenzie Nolan. Then Tretton, who had endured a tough outing in the circle, made amends at the plate by smashing a three-run homer to put Nevada back on top, 8-6. Relief pitcher Hailey McLean then delivered the game's first scoreless inning, retiring the side in order with two strikeouts.
The Wolf Pack kept their foot on the gas in the fourth. Tretton drew a bases-loaded walk, and Matlyn Leetch cleared the bases with a triple, pushing Nevada's lead to 12-6. Tensions boiled over in the bottom of the inning when Mountain West Coach of the Year Shanon Hays was ejected after leaving the dugout to argue with the home plate umpire.
