O'Gorman High School in Sioux Falls has made a major move for its boys' basketball program, officially elevating Dan Jansen to the role of Head Boys Basketball Coach. This isn't just a new hire; it's welcoming a proven winner with deep local roots back into the fold.
Jansen steps into the top role after serving as the Junior Varsity Coach at O'Gorman this past season, bringing nearly a decade of coaching experience. His resume includes a successful stint as Head Coach at Palmetto Christian Academy, where he led the team to a state Final Four and earned Region Coach of the Year honors in 2022. His philosophy has always centered on comprehensive player development, a trait honed through years of directing camps and skill clinics.
But what truly sets Jansen apart is his legendary playing career. Before he ever drew up a play as a coach, he was rewriting record books as a player at Augustana University. A four-year starter and three-time captain, Jansen left as the program's all-time leading scorer. His trophy case includes multiple First Team All-American selections and the pinnacle achievement: the 2016 NCAA Division II National Player of the Year award, which he earned while leading Augustana to a national championship.
After a professional career in Europe, Jansen returned to South Dakota with a passion for mentoring the next generation. "Daniel brings a unique combination of elite playing experience and a passion for teaching the game," said O'Gorman Athletic Director Steve Kueter. "His leadership continues to positively influence student-athletes and programs alike."
For Jansen, this opportunity is a homecoming in more ways than one. He is married to Chandler Jansen (née Nielsen), a 2012 O'Gorman alumna, making this a full-circle moment for the couple. "Chandler and I are very excited and thankful for the opportunity," Jansen said. "A lot of prayers were answered and I can’t wait to serve our basketball program."
With a national champion's pedigree and a teacher's heart, Dan Jansen is poised to build a culture of excellence at O'Gorman, aiming to inspire his players to compete at the highest level both on the court and in the classroom.
