NEW YORK — The Mets have dug themselves a massive hole in April.

They took one small step toward digging out of it on Tuesday night with an 8-0 victory over the Nationals in the series opener, ending a three-game losing streak

The Mets will look to back it up and pick up some positive momentum in the second game of the series at 7:10 p.m. on Wednesday at Citi Field.

The spark came up and down the lineup on Tuesday as Bo Bichette, Juan Soto and Carson Benge all driving in two runs.

David Peterson is set to return to the Mets rotation after two outings in the bullpen.

The veteran left-hander has not made a start since April 13 against the Diamondbacks when he gave up four earned runs in five innings. Peterson lowered his ERA from 6.41 to 5.06 with one earned run allowed in seven relief outings.

Cade Cavalli will make his fifth start for the Nationals. The 27-year-old right-hander is 0-1 with a 4.01 ERA and 1.66 WHIP this season.
