The New York Giants knew exactly what they were getting when they selected Miami offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa with the 10th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft—a powerhouse lineman ready to bring a new level of physicality to the trenches. And from the sound of it, Mauigoa is already living up to the billing.
"I'm going to work my butt off to the standard," Mauigoa said with the kind of intensity that makes coaches smile. "And hopefully uplift that standard."
That mentality is music to the ears of Giants fans who've been craving a tougher, more aggressive offensive line. Mauigoa seems to have found a kindred spirit in right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor, and the two are already building chemistry.
"He's a cool guy," Mauigoa said of Eluemunor. "We're excited about each other. Can't wait to move people."
While Mauigoa played right tackle in college, the Giants see him slotting in at right guard—right next to Eluemunor. Fortunately, this isn't a foreign position for the rookie. Under Miami offensive line coach Alex Mirabal, Mauigoa learned to master multiple spots along the line.
"Coach Mirabal believed in knowing all the positions," Mauigoa explained. "It makes sense. If you play all the positions, you make yourself valuable. Also, if you play right tackle, right guard, center, you know everything, you know everybody's job, and it makes it easier for you versus playing at one position."
He added that he's already put in work at guard during spring ball and summer workouts, so the transition is more about adjustment than starting from scratch.
There are, of course, key differences between guard and tackle. The game moves faster on the interior, with less space to operate—but also fewer assignments to juggle.
"I don't have that much space to work with," Mauigoa noted. "Playing at tackle, you have all the space, where a guard everything happens so fast. It's not something I really need to work on, it's something that I need to get used to."
In a twist that Giants fans will appreciate, Mauigoa has been preparing for the NFL with some help from a familiar face—former Giants offensive lineman Jon Feliciano. The veteran has been mentoring Mauigoa, passing along wisdom from his own pro career.
"He's very smart at what he does," Mauigoa said of Feliciano. "Jon has put a lot of knowledge of the game into me. One of the things he said to me that stood out to me is the game goes fast. There's just level."
