That's exactly what happened with Cal Golden Bears quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, one of the most exciting young talents in the country. According to a Cal official, numerous Power 4 programs have been accused of tampering with the star signal-caller, despite him never entering the portal.

Sagapolutele, affectionately known as "JKS," burst onto the scene as a true freshman starter for Cal, delivering a season that turned heads across the nation. He finished top-20 in passing yards with 3,454, threw for 18 touchdowns against nine interceptions, and added four more scores on the ground. For a freshman, that's not just impressive—it's the kind of performance that puts you on every coach's radar.

"Anytime you have a true freshman that comes in and balls out and does incredibly well, you're going to have teams that try and get in on him," a Cal official told The Sporting News on condition of anonymity. "There were numerous teams that came in and hit his representation up, hit his family up. Teams from all over the SEC, ACC, Big Ten. There were teams everywhere trying to get in on him."

The tampering allegations come amid a coaching change at Cal, with Tosh Lupoi taking over for Justin Wilcox. Interestingly, Lupoi was on staff at Oregon when Sagapolutele originally committed to the Ducks before flipping to the Golden Bears last season. Despite the upheaval and outside interest, Sagapolutele has stayed loyal to Berkeley, even after publicly declaring his commitment back in December.

"After spending time with my family, a lot of prayer and many discussions, I have come to realize that Cal is the best place for me," Sagapolutele told ESPN at the time.

Now, with an offseason of growth under his belt, the incoming sophomore is generating serious Heisman buzz. The coaching staff has worked hard to surround him with key playmakers, and the focus has shifted to his physical development. "The biggest thing for him is getting his body in a better spot," the Cal official added. "It was in a great spot last year. There's a natural progression happening."
