The Denver Nuggets are entering an offseason of tough decisions after a stunning first-round exit at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves. The No. 6 seed Timberwolves, despite missing Anthony Edwards for several games and losing Donte DiVincenzo to a torn Achilles, sent the reigning champs packing early. That early playoff exit has sparked fresh trade rumors, and one bold proposal suggests the Nuggets could shake up their core by swapping star guard Jamal Murray for a former New York Knicks standout.
Yahoo Sports' Tom Yaberstroh has floated a trade idea that would send Murray and Zeke Nnaji to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for RJ Barrett, Jakob Poeltl, and rookie sensation Collin Murray-Boyles. The move would be a gamble on youth and defense, with Barrett—a fellow Canadian—stepping into Murray's role as the primary scoring guard.
"This is a bet on CMB being the next Draymond Green," Yaberstroh wrote, referring to Murray-Boyles. "A defensive mastermind who could flourish next to Jokić's otherworldly playmaking abilities." He added that the 20-year-old South Carolina product could instantly become Denver's best defender while providing much-needed athleticism alongside Nikola Jokić.
Barrett, who signed a $107 million contract with the Knicks before being traded to Toronto, just played the best basketball of his career. In the 2026 playoffs, the 25-year-old averaged 24.1 points on 47.7% shooting from the field and 38.6% from three-point range against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Though the Raptors fell short, Barrett's breakout performance sent his trade value soaring.
The question for Denver is whether Barrett can provide 80% of Murray's offensive production while significantly upgrading the defensive end. With Jokić still in his prime, the Nuggets need to balance their roster around him. Swapping Murray for Barrett and a potential defensive anchor in Murray-Boyles could be the shakeup that keeps Denver in championship contention.
