Surrey build on Dan Lawrence's third century of the season to claim a narrow first-innings advantage over Notts.

Dan Lawrence powered to his third century of the season, steering Surrey to a slender first-innings lead over Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge—but this heavyweight County Championship clash is already shaping up as a draw.

The defending champions, Nottinghamshire, closed day three on 99-1, with England opener Ben Duckett unbeaten on 35. That leaves them 65 runs ahead with nine wickets still in hand after Surrey posted 449 in reply to Notts' first-innings 415. Lawrence anchored the Surrey innings with a stylish 104, but the two sides, who finished first and second in last year's Division One, look destined to share the spoils.

Nottinghamshire's Josh Tongue continued his impressive build-up to the Test series against New Zealand, claiming 4-89. But his short-pitched bowling came with an unfortunate twist: he inadvertently put England teammate Gus Atkinson out of the match with delayed concussion. Atkinson batted on for 45 minutes after taking two blows to the helmet from Tongue, but eventually left the field feeling unwell. Under concussion protocols, he's now automatically ruled out of Surrey's next Division One match against Yorkshire—his last chance to find red-ball rhythm before the opening Test at Lord's on 4 June.

Reece Topley has been drafted into the Surrey side for the remainder of the match. Meanwhile, Ollie Pope, who normally bats at four, dropped to number eight as a precaution after suffering a hand injury while fielding.

Dom Sibley had earlier ground out 77 in tricky conditions on Saturday, while Jordan Clark chipped in with 54. For Nottinghamshire, left-arm spinner Liam Patterson-White bowled a marathon 45.3 overs to finish with 4-135, taking his season tally to 19 wickets.

Lawrence's superb knock finally ended three overs before lunch, but with the pitch flattening and both teams eyeing points, this battle between the county giants looks set for a tame conclusion.
