Notre Dame basketball is taking its rivalry with Villanova global, with a historic season-opening doubleheader set for Rome, Italy, on November 1, 2026. The "Eternal City Tip-Off" will feature both the men's and women's teams, but the event has gained an even more unique dimension with the news that Pope Leo XIV is expected to attend.

Men's head coach Micah Shrewsberry highlighted the profound opportunity for his team. "This opportunity reflects what makes the University of Notre Dame unique—combining elite competition with meaningful global and cultural experiences," Shrewsberry stated. "It's a special chance for our student-athletes to represent our university on an international stage while growing in ways that extend far beyond basketball."

The pontiff's presence adds a significant layer of meaning to the event. Notre Dame President Rev. Robert A. Dowd, C.S.C., noted, “Pope Leo has spoken in such inspiring ways about the value of sport, emphasizing that sport is a ‘school of life’... a vision both Notre Dame and Villanova wholeheartedly embrace.” The Pope, an American who grew up in Chicago, is expected to take in the full spectacle.

For the Notre Dame women's team, coach Niele Ivey sees this as a landmark moment. “We are incredibly excited to compete in Rome... in what will be a historic moment for collegiate basketball," Ivey said. "For me, this is about more than the game—it’s about giving our student-athletes a truly holistic experience."

Mark your calendars for a morning of elite hoops with an international flair. The men's game tips off at 9:30 a.m. ET on Fox, followed by the women's contest at noon ET on FS1. This isn't just a season opener; it's a cultural and spiritual event that underscores the powerful role of sport in building character and community on a world stage.
