Former Detroit Lions starting cornerback Jerry Jacobs has officially announced his retirement from professional football, closing the chapter on a remarkable journey that began as an undrafted free agent.
The 28-year-old defensive back, who suited up for the Lions from 2021 to 2023, shared the news on social media Tuesday, expressing gratitude to everyone who supported his path to the NFL. "I want to thank God because without him I wouldn't be here," Jacobs wrote. "I also wanna thank my mother for always being on my side through whatever and always pushing me to go harder. To my sisters, thank you for putting me in a game of football. I always knew it would take me far. Your support means the world to me."
Jacobs revealed that the decision came after months of reflection. "I can finally feel complete about how my football story even went," he shared. "Football taught me how to be a man on and off the field and to be a better person."
After going undrafted out of Arkansas in 2021, Jacobs defied the odds by making 40 appearances with the Lions, including 29 starts. His standout 2023 season saw him record three interceptions, 55 tackles, and eight passes defended—numbers that showcased his growth into a reliable starter for Detroit's secondary.
When the Lions chose not to re-sign him, Jacobs briefly joined the Los Angeles Rams before being released, and later signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. Now, he's ready for what comes next. "I always knew it would come to an end one day but never thought I'll be making this post this soon but I know it's time," Jacobs wrote. "Retirement is not the end of the road. It is the beginning of the open highway."
In other Lions news, longtime Metro Detroit sports columnist Pat Caputo passed away last Thursday after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Fans and colleagues have been sharing tributes to the sports personality, who left a lasting impact on Michigan sports journalism.
Also this week, some of your favorite Lions players—including quarterback Jared Goff and safety Kerby Joseph—shared heartfelt Mother's Day messages. Goff went heartfelt, while Joseph went ride or die. Both understood the assignment. Happy Mother's Day to all the wonderful moms out there.
