Hull City striker Oli McBurnie has declared that the Tigers' place in the Championship play-offs is no fluke, insisting their hard-earned success is down to grit and determination—not luck.
The 29-year-old Scotland international netted both goals in a crucial 2-1 victory over Norwich City, snapping a six-game winless streak (four draws, two losses) and securing a play-off semi-final showdown against Millwall. The result, combined with Wrexham's failure to beat Middlesbrough, saw Hull leap into sixth place on the final day of the regular season.
"After the year on the whole, it would have been a real shame if we didn't make it," McBurnie told BBC Radio Humberside. "We've put ourselves in this position. No-one has put us there, it's not been luck. It's been real hard work from the boys, grind. We found something. We had to find it. We did it—we just wanted to make it more exciting for the fans, that's why we've been terrible for the last six weeks!"
Hull City will host Millwall in the first leg of the semi-final on Friday (20:00 BST), before traveling to the Den for the return leg on Monday (20:00 BST). Alex Neil's Lions narrowly missed out on a top-two finish by just one point, but McBurnie is relishing the challenge of a high-stakes encounter.
"I didn't want to come back to England for a team that was happy being mediocre," McBurnie added. "Me and Joel Ndala had a little text message last night, and I said to him, 'These are the days you live for, these are the days big players turn up.' And that's what we've done."
For fans looking to support their team in style this postseason, a fresh kit or a pair of match-day boots can make all the difference—just ask McBurnie, who proved that when the pressure's on, it's all about showing up and delivering.
