Norwich City Women have written their names into club history, securing promotion to the third tier of English women's football in a heart-stopping penalty shootout victory over Moneyfields. The Canaries' triumph at the Pirelli Stadium in Burton-on-Trent was a true test of nerve, with goalkeeper Sarah Quantrill emerging as the hero.
After a pulsating 90 minutes that ended 2-2, the match came down to spot-kicks. Quantrill saved two penalties—including the decisive stop against Lucy Chads—to seal a 6-5 shootout win and send Norwich up. "We just wanted to get to a point where either Quantsy saved it or we scored, and that's what we did—brilliant," head coach Andy Cook told BBC Radio Norfolk.
The drama began early, with Holly Kennard and Grace Riglar firing Norwich into a commanding two-goal lead. But Moneyfields, showing the resilience that defines the Women's National League, fought back to level before halftime. The Canaries then faced another setback in the shootout when Hope Strauss missed, leaving them 3-2 down. But Quantrill's heroics turned the tide, and Kennard stepped up to put Norwich ahead before the goalkeeper delivered the final blow.
"Pressure's only what you think it is," Cook said. "We'd worked that much on penalties, we knew what we were going to do—it was just then executing it. We had to trust the players, we had to believe in them, and they delivered."
The first 15 minutes of the match were, according to Cook, as good as Norwich had played all season. But after Moneyfields' comeback, the team needed to regroup at halftime. "We said at half-time, 'the first half's now gone, we won't speak about it, we'll just make sure we're performing in the second half'—and we did that," he added.
With promotion secured, Cook and head of women's football Flo Allen are already planning for the challenges ahead. "We've got to make sure we're ready for tier three because it is a ruthless league, the quality and ability those teams have," Cook said. "I'm really excited for the future."
For Quantrill, the victory was no surprise. "I was confident we would prevail," she said, having won the last shootout she faced. It's that belief, paired with a never-say-die attitude, that has Norwich City Women dreaming big as they prepare for life in the third tier.
