The Carla Berube era has officially tipped off in Evanston, and the new Northwestern head coach is wasting no time shaping her roster. In her introductory press conference, Berube emphasized a proactive approach in the transfer portal, seeking talented players who align with her coaching philosophy and the program's standards. This strategy has already borne fruit with two key additions, signaling an exciting rebuild for Wildcats fans.
Northwestern made its first splash by securing a commitment from Syracuse freshman guard Camdyn Nelson on April 12. Nelson, who served as a backup point guard for the Orange, brings depth to the backcourt as she looks to expand her role in the Big Ten.
The momentum continued just a day later when the Wildcats landed Kentucky sophomore guard Lexi Blue on April 13. Blue gained valuable experience in 28 games for the Wildcats, adding another versatile piece to Coach Berube's evolving backcourt strategy.
As new talent arrives, the portal has also seen departures. Sophomore forward Tayla Thomas, a key starter who led the team in rebounds last season, entered the portal on April 6. She was followed by freshman guard Angelina Hodgens, who entered on March 28 after appearing in 16 games. These moves highlight the roster turnover typical of a coaching transition, as Berube builds a squad tailored to her system.
With two commitments already secured and more moves expected, the Northwestern women's basketball program is clearly in an active and transformative phase. Stay tuned as Coach Berube continues to assemble her first Wildcats roster, aiming to build a competitive foundation for the future.
