Northwestern women’s basketball player review: Grace Sullivan

The “Amazing Grace” and the certified Wildcats legend.

Grace Sullivan didn't just play for Northwestern—she became a Wildcats legend. Dubbed "Amazing Grace" by fans, the 6-foot-4 forward took the torch from former frontcourt standouts Caileigh Walsh and Taylor Williams and turned her senior year into something truly special.

Starting 28 games last season, Sullivan posted eye-popping numbers: 21.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. Her scoring ranked fourth in the Big Ten and 13th nationally—no small feat in a conference loaded with talent. Even as the team struggled in the win column and head coach Joe McKeown stepped down, Sullivan delivered a career-best season that Wildcats fans won't soon forget.

What made Sullivan so dangerous? It wasn't brute force in the paint. Instead, she relied on incredible finesse and shot-making, especially her signature midrange fadeaway. With a high release point that made her nearly impossible to guard one-on-one, she could score at will unless opponents sent double teams her way. According to CBB Analytics, Sullivan attempted 20.6 two-point shots per 40 minutes and connected at a 53.0% clip. She also led the team in free-throw attempts (487) and shot 77.6% from the line, making her a constant threat to draw fouls and convert.

But Sullivan's game wasn't just about scoring. On defense, she anchored the paint alongside fellow 6-foot-4 forward Tayla Thomas, posting career highs of 0.8 blocks and 1.1 steals per game. Her ability to run the floor at both ends turned opponent mistakes into easy fastbreak buckets, keeping Northwestern competitive even when the talent gap seemed overwhelming.

Whether battling on the glass or rising up for another smooth fadeaway, Grace Sullivan embodied everything you want in a player: skill, heart, and a relentless motor. She leaves Northwestern as one of the program's all-time greats—and a true "Amazing Grace."
