The Maryland Class 1A West Region I baseball playoffs heat up this Saturday, as two county rivalry games will determine who advances to the championship round. It's win-or-go-home time, and the action promises to be intense.
In the first semifinal, top-seeded Northern (13-6) will host fourth-seeded Southern (9-10) at 3 p.m. The Huskies are looking to add to their recent region title success, having won two crowns in the past five seasons (2023 and 2021). Meanwhile, defending Class 1A state champion Allegany (11-6) takes on third-seeded Fort Hill (10-9-1) at 2 p.m. The Campers have been dominant in this region, winning the last two titles and three of the past four.
Both favorites swept their regular-season series, setting the stage for high-stakes rematches. Northern dominated Southern with scores of 9-1 and 11-1, while Allegany edged Fort Hill 3-0 and 8-3. But as any baseball fan knows, the playoffs are a fresh start.
Pitching will be key in the Garrett County battle. Northern will send right-hander Landon Yoder (4-1, 3.77 ERA) to the mound, while Southern counters with either RHP Ryan Bird (1-3, 3.59 ERA) or LHP Cade Leader (2-2, 3.08 ERA). At the plate, Northern's Jake Chambers is a force to be reckoned with—the Western Maryland Athletic Conference batting champ boasts a .517 average, .625 on-base percentage, four home runs, 26 RBIs, and 25 runs scored. For the Rams, Bird leads the team with a .333 average, 21 RBIs, and four homers, while Reece Tasker adds three big flies.
In the Cumberland city showdown, Allegany's Kohen Madden (5-1, 1.29 ERA) faces off against Fort Hill's Bobby Brauer (2-1, 2.30 ERA). Madden is also a standout hitter, leading the Campers with a .538 average, 22 RBIs, and 17 runs scored. For the Sentinels, Coye Resh (.397) and Brauer (.394) are the top hitters to watch.
With two spots in the region championship on the line, expect nothing less than playoff drama under the Saturday sun. Whether you're rooting for a repeat champion or an underdog upset, this is baseball at its best.
