North Greenville's bats came alive when it mattered most on Saturday, as the Trailblazers fought off elimination twice to keep their Conference Carolinas Tournament hopes alive in Gastonia, NC.
The day started with a gritty 6-2 win over sixth-seeded Mount Olive in the morning elimination game. After falling behind 1-0 on a first-inning solo homer, the Trailblazers leaned on starter Bennett Roemer, who settled in and held the Trojans in check for five innings. Roemer scattered five hits over 5.1 innings, striking out seven while allowing just two runs—one of which came on a controversial inside-the-park homer in the sixth.
Trailing 2-1, Lane McGaha launched a solo shot to left-center in the sixth to tie the game. But the real drama came in the eighth. Thomas Sparked a rally with a leadoff single, and after a tense at-bat, Kai Tullos drew a bases-loaded walk to knot the game at 3-3. Landon Peavy followed with an RBI single to give NGU its first lead in nearly 17 innings of tournament play. Joe Cash then delivered the knockout blow—a ground-ball single to right that scored two more runs, pushing the lead to 5-2.
The Trailblazers added an insurance run in the ninth on an RBI groundout, and Thomas Skipper shut the door with two scoreless innings of relief. Connor Brenson earned the win after escaping a bases-loaded jam in the sixth with back-to-back strikeouts. McGaha finished 2-for-4 with a homer and two runs scored, while Skyler Hegler and Thomas Powell each added two hits.
But the Trailblazers weren't done. In Saturday night's second elimination game, North Greenville wasted no time jumping ahead of Francis Marion, scoring two runs in the first inning and never looking back in an 11-3 rout. The offense exploded for 11 runs on 13 hits, keeping the pressure on from the opening pitch. The win sets up a pivotal matchup as NGU continues its march toward a Conference Carolinas Championship—one elimination game at a time.
