Missouri Southern Baseball has been eliminated from the MIAA tournament following a loss against 6-seed Emporia State. See our recap and highlights below.

The No. 3 seeded Missouri Southern Lions saw their MIAA tournament run come to a heartbreaking end late Thursday night in Edmond, Oklahoma, falling 4-2 to the No. 6 seeded Emporia State Hornets. It was a battle of grit and determination, but ultimately, the Lions' comeback fell just short in the final inning.

The Hornets struck first, grabbing a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning on a two-RBI single from Brady Unrein. But true to form, the Lions answered back immediately. In the bottom of the fourth, Brayden Luikart ignited the offense with a triple, setting the stage for Blake Jones to launch a two-run home run over the fence, knotting the game at 2-2. It was the kind of momentum-shifting swing that defines postseason baseball.

From there, the game turned into a classic pitchers' duel. Both teams combined for just 11 hits on the night—seven for Emporia State and only four for MSSU. Lions starter Owen Schneider delivered a gritty quality start, tossing six innings while allowing three earned runs on five hits and striking out four. It was a performance that kept his team in the game, but the Hornets slowly regained control, scratching across a run in the sixth and another in the eighth to build a 4-2 lead.

But the Lions weren't done. In the bottom of the ninth, with their season on the line, MSSU managed to put two runners on base, bringing the winning run to the plate. The tension was palpable, and the crowd was on its feet. However, Emporia State's pitcher slammed the door, recording all three outs via strikeout and ending the Lions' rally—and their tournament hopes.

Now, Missouri Southern must wait for a potential at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Baseball National Tournament. The selection show is set for Sunday, May 10, where the Lions will learn if they've earned a spot in the 56-team field. For a team that showed so much fight, the wait is just beginning—and the dream of a national title is still alive.
