In a thrilling showdown at Southern High School, the No. 3 Northern Huskies showcased their championship mettle, rallying for a dramatic 7-5 victory over Mountain Ridge on Friday. The game was a testament to the Huskies' resilience, as they overcame an early deficit to secure a win that keeps them in the thick of the Western Maryland Athletic Conference race.
Mountain Ridge came out swinging, scoring three runs in the opening frames to seize control. But Northern, now 11-6 overall and 6-2 in conference play, refused to back down. They clawed their way back, taking a 5-3 lead before the Miners fought back to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. That's when Camilya Burley stepped up in the seventh, delivering a clutch two-RBI single to right field that broke the deadlock and sent the Huskies to victory.
On the mound, Rain Ritchey was a warrior, tossing a complete game for the win. She allowed five runs—only two earned—on four hits, striking out six and walking three. Her command under pressure kept the Miners at bay when it mattered most. At the plate, Demi Ross, a Lock Haven signee, led the charge with a 3-for-4 performance that included a double and three runs scored. Burley added two singles, three RBIs, and two runs, while Bailey Champlin and Ava Wilhelm each chipped in with two hits.
For Mountain Ridge (8-9, 3-4 WestMAC), Juliana Burriss suffered the loss despite a solid complete-game effort, allowing four earned runs on 12 hits with five strikeouts and no walks. The Miners will look to rebound when they host No. 1 Allegany on Monday.
In other action, Mountain Ridge's offense exploded for 16 hits in a dominant win over Southern, with Macy Barth and Maci Beeman each collecting four hits. Beeman laced two doubles, while Barth singled four times. Destinee Johnson earned the win in the circle, allowing five runs on 14 hits while striking out five. Southern, now 7-10 and winless in conference play, got multi-hit games from six players but couldn't overcome the Miners' relentless attack.
Northern also swept a doubleheader against Southern, racing to an 8-0 lead after the first inning of game two. Bailey Champlin doubled and drove in runs, while Demi Ross and Rain Ritchey each had two hits and two RBIs. Champlin earned the win in the circle, allowing four runs over five innings.
With the postseason looming, the Huskies are hitting their stride, proving they have the depth and grit to compete with anyone. Mountain Ridge, meanwhile, will look to regroup and make a push in the conference standings. For fans of high school softball, these are the kind of games that define a season—and the kind of performances that fill the stands and inspire the next generation of stars.
