In a thrilling display of grit and championship poise, the No. 1 Florida State Seminoles softball team captured their 20th ACC Tournament title with a tense 2-1 victory over No. 3 Virginia Tech. The win not only adds another trophy to the Seminoles' storied legacy but also secures their automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament—a fitting reward for a season defined by elite pitching and clutch hitting.
ACC Pitcher of the Year Jazzy Francik started in the circle for the designated home team, but the Hokies struck first. A one-out double and a rare infield error from Isa Torres allowed Virginia Tech to push across a run, taking a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the first inning.
The Seminoles wasted no time threatening. Jaysoni Beachum drew a walk and advanced to third on a wild pitch from Tech's Emma Mazzarone, but a two-out strikeout stranded her in scoring position. Francik responded with a crisp 1-2-3 inning, setting the stage for a pivotal second frame.
Bella Ruggiero led off with a walk, and Kennedy Harp delivered the game's biggest swing—a double that tied the score and ignited the FSU dugout. With Harp on third, another wild pitch from Mazzarone allowed the go-ahead run to cross the plate. Though the Seminoles loaded the bases with two walks, a soft line drive ended the inning, leaving the score at 2-1.
Francik continued to battle, recording two quick outs in the fourth, including a strikeout, before giving way to reliever Ashtyn Danley. The junior got the final out of the inning, and Virginia Tech turned to Avery Layton in the circle. The only Seminole hit in the bottom half was a two-out double from Anna Hinde.
Danley issued a leadoff walk in the fifth, and a stolen base and ground ball moved the runner to third. With two outs and a walk putting runners on the corners, head coach Lonni Alameda made the call back to Francik. A full-count walk loaded the bases, but Torres made a stellar play on a soft line drive to escape the jam unscathed.
Layton retired the Seminoles in order in the sixth, setting up a dramatic seventh inning. With three outs separating FSU from another ACC crown, Francik induced a leadoff groundout, then a pop-up and another grounder sealed the 2-1 victory and the championship.
The Seminoles will now wait to learn their NCAA Tournament seeding, with the selection show set for Sunday, May 10 at 7 p.m. on ESPN. For a team that has worn the ACC crown 20 times, this title feels like just the beginning of what could be another deep postseason run.
