The countdown to New Mexico's spring sports championships has officially begun, and the action kicks off this week with a packed schedule of tennis, baseball, softball, and track events that promise plenty of excitement for sports fans across the state.
First up, the state tennis tournaments serve off on Wednesday, with individual singles and doubles brackets taking center stage over two days. All eyes will be on Ketan Garg of La Cueva, the defending state champion and top seed in Class 5A boys singles. His first match, like all players', tips off Wednesday afternoon at 1:30. Two rounds of singles will keep the courts busy on opening day, followed by semifinals at 10:30 a.m. Thursday and the championship match at 2 p.m., both at the Jerry Cline courts near I-40 and Louisiana.
On the girls' side, Savannah Reiman of Organ Mountain enters as the No. 1 seed in the 16-player bracket, looking to defend her title from last year. In Class 4A, Adrian Hanna of Albuquerque Academy leads the boys division, with action starting at Academy on Wednesday before moving to Jerry Cline for Thursday's semifinals and finals. Sadye Bruce of the Chargers is the favorite in 4A girls singles, seeded first and following the same schedule.
But the real story might be Albuquerque Academy's incredible boys tennis dynasty, which has won 22 consecutive state championships. The Chargers chase No. 23 when the Class 1A-4A team competition begins Friday. Academy is the top seed, with Belen close behind at No. 2. Academy's girls, riding a six-title streak, are also seeded first this week, setting up a potential powerhouse double.
In Class 5A, Centennial's boys grab the top seed, while La Cueva—the defending state champion and chasing a seventh straight blue trophy—is seeded second. Farmington and Sandia lead the 5A girls bracket. The team tournament kicks off with first and second rounds Friday, with championship matches scheduled Saturday at 3 p.m. for 1A-4A and 4:30 p.m. for 5A finals, all at Jerry Cline.

Oak Grove Classical Academy of Albuquerque, the No. 11 seed in 2A, visits No. 6 Estancia at 3 p.m. Four first-round games are set Wednesday, with top four seeds earning byes until quarterfinals in Albuquerque on May 14. Class 1A baseball features just a six-team field, with two opening-round games Wednesday before resuming May 14.
Softball swings into action Wednesday for Classes 3A and 1A-2A. Sandia Prep faces Hatch Valley in a 3A first-rounder in Bayard at 4 p.m., with the winner taking on No. 4 Cobre at 6 p.m. First-round games in 1A-2A stretch across Wednesday and Thursday.
