NL West report: Piling up losses

24 losses in 30 games for the division last week, and two teams hit zero home runs

The National League West had a week to forget, as the division collectively stumbled to a brutal 6-24 record. It was a bloodbath that saw the Dodgers, Padres, Giants, and Diamondbacks all suffer their longest losing streaks of the season, while the Rockies fell just short of their worst stretch in 2026 with four straight losses to close the week.

Perhaps most telling was the power outage that struck two of the division's storied franchises. Neither the Dodgers nor the Giants managed to hit a single home run all week, with San Francisco particularly struggling—losing all six of their games. The Giants have now gone homerless in an MLB-high 21 of their 34 games this season, a drought that has contributed to their worst-in-baseball average of just 3.12 runs per game. As Steven Kennedy of McCovey Chronicles put it, "Runs have been hard to come by for this club. Wall-clearing power, nearly impossible."

Amid the chaos, there were a few bright spots. Diamondbacks utility man Ildemaro Vargas had his 27-game hit streak snapped on Saturday, marking his first hitless game of the year. During that remarkable run—which dated back to 2025—Vargas hit an impressive .400/.427/.667 while playing every infield position. Samath and Jim McLennan at AZ Snake Pit noted it was the longest Diamondbacks hit streak since 1999.

Over in San Diego, Padres reliever Mason Miller saw his scoreless streak end at 34 2/3 innings after allowing two runs to the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday. Still, the Padres managed to win that game before their losing streak began, and Miller has been nearly untouchable since joining San Diego—allowing a run in just two of his 37 appearances dating back to last year's trade deadline.

Meanwhile, Samantha Bradfield at Purple Row highlighted the Rockies' cultural education and development program for their Dominican academy and summer league team, offering a glimpse into the organization's long-term investment in player growth.

As the standings show, the Dodgers and Padres remain neck-and-neck at the top, but the rest of the division has work to do: Dodgers 21-13, Padres 20-13 (0.5 GB), Diamondbacks 16-17 (4.5 GB), Rockies 14-21 (7.5 GB), Giants 13-21 (8 GB). For fans looking to gear up for the season ahead, it might be time to invest in some rally caps and power-hitting inspiration.
