The National League West is not exactly a wild, wild west.

The National League West is playing out exactly as expected—and that's the problem. For a division with "West" in its name, there's surprisingly little wild, wild chaos this season.

The 2026 MLB season has kicked off strong for most of the National League, especially the NL Central. But when you look at the NL West, the story is less about surprises and more about predictability. As most fans presumed before Opening Day, this division belongs to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The back-to-back World Series champions are once again the team to beat.

However, there's one small wrinkle that could make things interesting: the San Diego Padres. The Friars have been impressive so far, powered by a bullpen that's been nothing short of fantastic. Their early-season surge suggests they might give the Dodgers a real run for their money.

Beyond these two heavyweights, the rest of the division is playing to form. MLB.com's Will Leitch gave the NL West a chaos factor of just 2.0 out of 10—and that rating feels spot-on. The Dodgers and Padres are likely to battle it out for the top spot, with Los Angeles holding the edge. The Arizona Diamondbacks will probably finish a distant third, while the Colorado Rockies and San Francisco Giants will scrap for the basement—not just in the division, but in the entire National League. Expect the Giants to edge out the Rockies in that reverse-sweepstakes.

Of course, it's only May. Injuries, trades, and hot streaks can turn any division on its head. But right now, with a two-headed monster at the top, the NL West looks like it'll stay the course through September.

For fans of the teams at the bottom, this might feel like a long season. But for the Dodgers and Padres, it's shaping up to be another classic showdown.
