In a move that has sent shockwaves through the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund's commanding centre-back Niklas Süle has announced he will hang up his boots at the end of the season. The 30-year-old, whose contract with the Black and Yellows expires this summer, revealed his decision on the "Spielmacher" podcast, citing a recent knee injury as the final push toward retirement.
"I would like to announce that I will be ending my career this summer," Süle said, his voice carrying the weight of a decision that has been brewing for some time. The former Germany international had been battling the idea of early retirement, but a terrifying moment on the pitch against TSG Hoffenheim last month sealed the deal. "What I felt when our team doctor did the drawer test in the dressing room in Hoffenheim—a test to detect a possible cruciate ligament tear—looked at the physio and shook his head, and the physio did it too and didn’t feel any resistance either—I went into the shower and cried for ten minutes. In that moment, I really thought: 'It’s torn.'"
Thankfully, an MRI the next day brought relief—it wasn't a cruciate ligament tear after all. But for Süle, the scare was enough. "When I received the good news, it was one thousand per cent clear to me that it was over. I couldn’t imagine anything worse than looking forward to life—being independent, going on holiday, spending time with my children—only to then have to come to terms with my third cruciate ligament tear."
Süle, a towering presence at 6'5", joined Dortmund from Bayern Munich in 2022, making 109 appearances for the club. Across his career, he racked up 299 Bundesliga appearances for Hoffenheim, Bayern, and Dortmund, earning 49 caps for Germany. His blend of strength, composure, and tactical intelligence made him a stalwart in defense—a player whose journey from a promising youth at Hoffenheim to a key figure at two of Germany's biggest clubs is a story of resilience and class. As he prepares to walk off the pitch for the final time, fans will remember a defender who gave his all, even when his body told him it was time to stop.
