Wessel Nijman is writing his name in the darts history books, channeling the legendary Michael van Gerwen with an incredible fifth Players Championship title in a single year.
The 25-year-old Dutch sensation put on a masterclass in Hildesheim, Germany, dismantling Max Hopp 8-1 in a completely one-sided final. This victory marks a milestone that hadn't been reached since Van Gerwen himself dominated the circuit back in 2016, showing just how special this run truly is.
"Records aren't really on my mind," Nijman shared with the PDC. "What matters is the level I'm playing at right now. My goal is simple: break into the top 16 and get as close to that number one spot as possible by year's end."
While Nijman was stealing the spotlight, several top-tier names were notably absent from this event, including rising stars Luke Littler and Luke Humphries. Meanwhile, Van Gerwen's own campaign came to an early end in the third round, falling 6-4 to Austria's Mensur Suljovic. Two-time world champion Gary Anderson also had a rough outing, stunned 6-5 by Lewis Pride in the very first round.
With a total of 34 Players Championship events throughout the season, the pressure is on as players battle for positioning ahead of the finals in Minehead this November. Nijman's blistering form suggests he's not just chasing records—he's building a legacy.
