When you think of Jose Mourinho, you think of a manager who has conquered nearly every league he's stepped foot in. But his tenure at Manchester United? That's where opinions start to split.

Fans had high hopes when the "Special One" arrived at Old Trafford. They believed he'd be the one to restore the Red Devils to their former glory. And for a while, it looked like he might just do it. His first season was electric—but as time went on, the Portuguese tactician grew frustrated, and eventually, the magic faded.

But former United midfielder Nicky Butt is here to set the record straight. Speaking on his podcast The Good, The Bad & The Football, Butt argued that Mourinho deserves far more credit for what he accomplished in Manchester.

Let's rewind. Mourinho's arrival was a bit of a whirlwind. He was announced just days after Louis van Gaal lifted the FA Cup—a move that split the fanbase. Many felt the Dutchman deserved more time after delivering the club's first trophy since Sir Alex Ferguson retired. But despite the rocky start, Mourinho hit the ground running.

He brought in game-changers like Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and the results spoke for themselves. While his first season was undoubtedly his peak, Mourinho maintained solid performances throughout most of his time at the club. In fact, he boasts the fourth-best win rate of any Manchester United manager in history.

"A lot of people didn’t like him at Man United; he got a lot of bad press, but I thought he was brilliant," Butt said. "They finished second, won the Europa League."

And he's not wrong. In terms of silverware, Mourinho's first season was United's most successful since Fergie's retirement. He bagged the Community Shield, the EFL Cup, and the Europa League—a trophy haul that many managers would envy.

Butt expanded on his point, drawing a comparison to the club's legendary manager. "We got brought up with arguably the best manager of all time, but that’s not what just makes Sir Alex great," he said. "It’s not what makes Pep great, either."

So, was Mourinho's time at United really a failure? Or is it time we looked back with a little more appreciation for what he achieved?
