BOSTON -- The Philadelphia 76ers got back to work on Monday at Harvard University following a Game 1 loss to the Boston Celtics. It was a hard practice as the Sixers had a lot to figure out as they continue on in this series against the heavily favored Celtics.
Not only did the Sixers get after it in practice, but coach Nick Nurse needed to be sure they understood what they needed to correct in a very deep and detailed film session.
"I mean, listen, you gotta look at what's there, and obviously it was pretty painful to watch," Nurse said. "A lot of things—not very well. A lot of things out of character, etc. So it was long. It was long. Lots to look at, lots to talk about."
There certainly was a lot to watch for Nurse and Co. to go through. The Sixers were not forceful enough on the defensive end of the floor as the Celtics had a lot of easy looks at the basket whether it was from the 3-point line or at the basket. Both Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown put the ball on the floor and got after it. That's something to see on film and correct completely.
"We needed that," Andre Drummond said. "I mean, we could have came here and walked through all of our sets and try to prepare for tomorrow, but I think physically watching what we did to kind of beat ourselves, and things that we could have done better and could've more of, and what we need to do to watch on film today. And yes, it was very long and very detailed."
NBA film sessions are long. Especially, in the playoffs when the focus on the details have to be much better as those details can decide games in this league. One bad mistake leads to a run for the opposition and it allows that team to get into a rhythm. All of a sudden, a 3-point game is now a 15-point game due to some momentum.
"We stopped and go. A lot of things we wrote on the board for what we need to do for tomorrow," added Drummond. "So, I think we're prepared. I think we're ready. I think we just needed to get that first game under our belt, regardless of what the score was. I think we needed to get that game under our belt and kind of feel what the atmosphere is going to be, and I believe we'll be fine."
The Sixers certainly need to correct a lot of issues as they head into Game 2. It would be a huge help to their chances if they can steal one on the road before the scene shifts to Philadelphia for Games 3 and 4. This detailed film session that Nurse and his staff put on for the group could be something that helps them turn things around in the future.
