Northern Ireland football royalty is set to receive its highest honor as legends Marissa Callaghan and Gareth McAuley prepare for induction into the Northern Ireland Football Writers' Association Hall of Fame.
These two icons will take their place alongside the game's greatest names, including George Best, Harry Gregg, David Healy, and Steven Davis—a testament to their extraordinary contributions to Northern Irish football.
Callaghan, a former midfield maestro, made history by captaining the women's national team at the Euro 2022 finals—the side's first major tournament appearance. After a stellar career that earned her 91 international caps, she hung up her boots this year, leaving behind a legacy that includes two Women's Premiership titles with Cliftonville (2022 and an unbeaten 2024 campaign).
"It's an honour to join the NIFWA Hall of Fame alongside so many famous names from the world of football," said Callaghan, who will become the first women's player ever to receive this honor at Sunday's annual awards. "The award is not just a reflection of my efforts, but the support and help of all my teammates and coaches over the years."
Joining her in the Hall of Fame is Gareth McAuley, a defensive titan who earned 80 caps for Northern Ireland between 2005 and 2018. McAuley etched his name into football folklore with one of the most iconic goals in the nation's history—the decisive strike in the historic Euro 2016 victory over Ukraine in Lyon, a moment that still sends chills down the spine of every Northern Ireland fan.
At club level, McAuley's journey began in the Irish League with Crusaders and Coleraine before he rose through the ranks at Lincoln City, Leicester City, Ipswich Town, West Bromwich Albion, and Rangers. His career is a masterclass in perseverance and excellence.
"It's very pleasing and an honour to be inducted into the Football Writers' Hall of Fame," McAuley reflected. "The Euros was ten years ago, and I've been retired nearly seven years, so to be remembered and recognised in this way is really humbling."
Both legends will be celebrated at the NIFWA annual awards this Sunday, where their remarkable journeys will inspire the next generation of footballers—and remind us all that greatness never fades.
