Shades of Cutter Gauthier?

In a development that's sure to stir emotions among Philadelphia Flyers fans, the Matvei Michkov saga is once again dominating offseason headlines. The young phenom ended the season as a healthy scratch, and while things largely went smoothly under John Tortorella and later Brad Shaw, the conversation has reignited—and it's reopening some old wounds.

The Flyers fanbase has split into two camps. One side believes head coach Rick Tocchet was right to bench an underperforming, out-of-shape Michkov. The other argues the organization mishandled the situation, giving the player little chance to thrive in a meaningful role. The truth, as it often does, lies somewhere in between.

Enter NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, who recently weighed in on his "32 Thoughts" podcast. With no allegiance to either side, Friedman offered a balanced take on the Michkov situation—and delivered a pointed warning to the Flyers front office: don't even think about trading him.

Friedman invoked the ghost of Cutter Gauthier, a painful memory for Flyers fans. Gauthier, a highly touted prospect, was drafted by Philadelphia but never suited up for the team before being traded away. "Look what happened with Cutter Gauthier... just look at Gauthier's natural gifts. It's really hard to let two players walk like that in a short period of time," Friedman said. "Gauthier was a really good pick by Philadelphia that didn't work out. And Michkov, I still say, was a really good pick by the Flyers. I just don't think you can give up that easily."

Friedman's message to general manager Danny Briere was clear: find a way to make it work. "You would have to show me a trade that really blows me away," he added. "You can't find guys like this."

For Flyers fans still stinging from the Gauthier departure, the thought of losing another generational talent is almost too much to bear. Michkov's raw skill is undeniable, and as Friedman noted, players of his caliber don't come around often. Whether it's a matter of system fit, conditioning, or simply growing pains, the consensus is clear: giving up on Michkov now would be a mistake the franchise might never recover from.

As the offseason unfolds, all eyes will be on Briere and the Flyers' brass. The question isn't just about Michkov's future in Philadelphia—it's about whether the organization has learned from its past.
