The NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs are heating up, and two teams have already punched their tickets to the Conference Finals. The Carolina Hurricanes swept the Philadelphia Flyers, while the Colorado Avalanche took down the Minnesota Wild in five games. As the competition intensifies, the race for the Conn Smythe Trophy—awarded to the playoff MVP—is also taking shape. Here's a look at the top five candidates leading the charge.

The Hurricanes have been nothing short of dominant. They're the first team since the introduction of the best-of-seven format in 1987 to win their first eight playoff games. That means they'll head into the Eastern Conference Final more refreshed than a vacationer after a two-week all-inclusive getaway. It's no surprise that three of the five Conn Smythe favorites wear Hurricanes jerseys. The other two top contenders play for the Avalanche, who have lost just one game en route to the Western Conference Final.

But there's one player shaking up the narrative: Mitch Marner of the Vegas Golden Knights. He's the only candidate not on the Hurricanes or Avalanche, and he's making a strong case for himself. Marner has recorded at least one point in eight of 11 games, including four multi-point outings. His most electric performance came in Anaheim, where he exploded for four points and a hat trick. He currently leads the playoffs with 16 points and has six goals—just one behind the five players tied for the lead with seven. Add a plus-9 rating and key contributions on special teams (the Golden Knights boast the second-best penalty kill at 87.9 percent among remaining teams), and Marner is flipping the script on his playoff reputation.

Meanwhile, Taylor Hall of the Hurricanes is making his own case. He's racked up 12 points in eight games, averaging 1.5 points per contest—slightly better than Marner's 1.45. Hall has scored in seven of eight games, including a three-point performance in Game 4 against the Flyers. His linemates, Logan Stankoven and Jackson Blake, are also among the Conn Smythe favorites, highlighting the Hurricanes' depth and dominance through two rounds.

As the Conference Finals approach, the race for playoff MVP is wide open. Will Marner continue to defy expectations, or will the Hurricanes or Avalanche stars steal the spotlight? Stay tuned—this is hockey at its finest.
