Five NFL teams are currently left out of the primetime spotlight for the 2026 season, and the reason is simpler than you might think. The New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals, Tennessee Titans, Miami Dolphins, and Las Vegas Raiders all find themselves without a scheduled primetime game—no Sunday Night Football, no Monday Night Football, and no Thursday Night showcase.
According to NFL VP of Broadcasting Planning Mike North, the scheduling process is largely merit-based. In other words, you have to earn your time under the bright lights. "We don't draft our way into primetime. We play our way into primetime," North explained during a recent conference call.
The most surprising omission might be the Raiders, given the excitement around No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza. But as North pointed out, uncertainty around the rookie's playing time makes it tough for schedulers to commit. "Nobody knows if or when Mendoza might play," North said. "They signed a very competent veteran quarterback, and if they're hovering around .500 and playoff-relevant, they might be reluctant to move to the rookie. But if they are playoff-relevant, they'll find themselves flexed into bigger windows."
North drew a direct comparison to last year's Tennessee Titans, who also drafted a quarterback first overall (Cam Ward) but failed to land a primetime slot. The lesson? Hype alone doesn't sell tickets—performance does. For fans of these five teams, there's still hope: flex scheduling can change everything as the season unfolds. But for now, these teams will have to prove themselves during the day before they get their shot at the night.
