The 2026 NFL Draft saw just two quarterbacks selected in the first round, but all eyes are now on Brendan Sorsby—a rising talent whose journey has taken a dramatic turn. The college standout, who still has eligibility after transferring to Texas Tech for the 2026 season, now faces serious gambling allegations that could end his collegiate career before it truly begins.

At just 22 years old, Sorsby has taken a leave of absence following reports that he bet on multiple sporting events, including games involving his former team, the Indiana Hoosiers. While he hasn't been caught wagering on games he played in, the situation has raised major red flags for NFL scouts and league officials alike.

NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero recently stirred the pot, suggesting Sorsby could actually benefit from the controversy. "If Brendan Sorsby goes into the supplementary draft, we are probably going to have the highest drafted supplemental draft player in decades," Pelissero said on "The Rich Eisen Show." That's a bold claim for a player whose draft stock is suddenly clouded by off-field issues.

But here's the problem: rewarding Sorsby with a high supplemental draft pick would set a dangerous precedent. The NFL and NCAA already walk a fine line, partnering with betting companies while punishing players for gambling. Calvin Ridley lost an entire season in 2022 for betting on NFL games, and Jameson Williams also faced a suspension. If Sorsby gets a pass—or worse, a promotion—it sends the wrong message to every athlete navigating the risky world of sports betting.

Sorsby's talent is undeniable, and he was even in the Heisman conversation before this scandal broke. But the NFL must think carefully before letting a player with such serious allegations slide into the league without consequences. Integrity matters, and the league's stance on gambling should be consistent—whether you're a proven veteran or a promising rookie.
