Big changes are happening in the world of football broadcasting, and it's shaking up how fans watch their favorite games. The NFL Network has officially moved from league ownership to ESPN as part of a landmark equity deal that also saw the NFL take a 10% ownership stake in the network. But with this new partnership comes an old headache: a carriage dispute that's leaving some fans in the dark.

This week, agreements between Comcast and both NFL Network and the linear RedZone Channel expired. Now that these networks are under ESPN's umbrella, it's up to Bristol to negotiate a new deal. This isn't the first time we've seen this play out—it's the second carriage dispute in three years between these two giants, following a 2023 blackout that was resolved only after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Comcast CEO Brian Roberts stepped in directly.

A Comcast spokesperson confirmed the situation to Cord Cutters, stating, "Our contract to carry NFL Network and NFL Red Zone has expired, and we're in discussions with the new owner, Disney/ESPN, about our future carriage of the network." On the other side, a Disney spokesperson expressed frustration, saying, "We understand how disappointing and disruptive this is for football fans who have lost access to NFL Network and RedZone Channel as part of their Xfinity TV lineup. We proposed keeping these channels available while we continued good-faith negotiations, but unfortunately Comcast declined and took them down. Despite this, we remain fully committed to reaching a fair agreement and restoring access to our best-in-class NFL programming as quickly as possible."

Interestingly, Disney and Comcast managed to avoid a similar crisis last fall when they quickly reached an agreement to prevent the kind of extended blackout that plagued YouTube TV during football season, causing fans to miss several games. However, the acquisition of NFL Network and RedZone wasn't finalized until this year, so new negotiations are necessary now that the original league agreements have expired.

For football fans, there's a silver lining: the timing couldn't be better. With the season still months away, this is about as low-stress as it gets for a potential blackout. But as the NFL landscape continues to evolve, one thing is clear—how you watch your favorite teams is changing, and staying informed is key to never missing a snap.
