The NFL has confirmed it is not investigating New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel regarding his recent interactions with former Athletic reporter Dianna Russini. This follows the publication of photos showing the two together at an Arizona resort, which led to Russini's resignation and an internal review at The Athletic.
NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy stated the league is not looking into the matter. The Patriots organization has not yet commented on whether it will conduct its own review of Vrabel's actions.
The photos, published by the New York Post, were reportedly taken prior to the NFL's annual meetings in Phoenix. While the league's personal conduct policy mandates behavior that maintains public confidence, the NFL has determined no formal investigation is warranted at this time.
Vrabel, a three-time Super Bowl champion as a Patriots player, is entering his second season as the team's head coach. He is coming off an impressive debut season where he led New England to a 14-3 record and a Super Bowl appearance, earning AP NFL Coach of the Year honors—an award he also won in 2021 with the Tennessee Titans.
Both Vrabel and Russini, who are married to other people, have issued statements downplaying the nature of the photos. Russini, a respected NFL insider who joined The Athletic in 2023 after a long tenure at ESPN, resigned shortly after the images surfaced, stating in her resignation letter her commitment to professional coverage throughout her career.
