When the Indianapolis Colts made Jalen Farmer their first pick of Day 3 in the 2026 NFL Draft, they may have landed a rookie who's ready to hit the ground running. ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler has reported that the Kentucky offensive lineman is expected to "likely play early and often" this season—high praise for a fourth-round selection.
Farmer brings a combination of athleticism and toughness that has Colts' brass buzzing. A team source told Fowler that Farmer is a "great person, all about football," adding that he "ran a 4.4 and is tough." That speed for an offensive lineman is eye-catching, but it's his versatility that could really pay off. General Manager Chris Ballard believes Farmer can play both guard and tackle, giving him a clear path to compete for snaps on the right side of the line alongside Matt Goncalves or Jalen Travis.
The timing couldn't be better. Last season, the Colts' offensive line struggled to create consistent running lanes for star running back Jonathan Taylor during the second half of the year. With Ballard recently saying the team will "bet on some development" from younger players like Goncalves and Travis, neither appears locked into a starting role. That opens the door for Farmer to step in and make an impact quickly.
Still, it's worth noting that Farmer is an incoming rookie competing against a third-year starter in Goncalves—who played every game last year—and Travis, who gained valuable experience late in his second season. Calling Farmer "likely" to play right away might be optimistic, or it could be a testament to just how special the Colts believe this Day 3 pick really is.
