NFL insider Jeremy Fowler has laid out a scenario in which he could see the Pittsburgh Steelers trading superstar edge rusher T.J. Watt in 2027.

In a scenario that would send shockwaves through the NFL, ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler has outlined a possible future where Pittsburgh Steelers legend T.J. Watt could be on the trading block as early as 2027.

While the idea of Watt wearing anything but black and gold seems almost unthinkable, the reality of roster management and salary cap constraints could force the Steelers' hand. The key figure in this equation? Rising star Nick Herbig.

Fowler suggests that if Herbig hits free agency next offseason, he could command a significant payday—perhaps even more than his current name recognition suggests. But if Pittsburgh locks him up long-term before that happens, the math gets complicated.

"Having three large contracts allocated to one position is a tough proposition," Fowler wrote, referencing the potential trio of Watt, Herbig, and Alex Highsmith all earning premium salaries.

Watt, who turns 32 this October, is coming off a season that saw him record just seven sacks in 14 games—a far cry from the dominant form that made him a Defensive Player of the Year. Over the past two seasons combined, he's managed only 18.5 sacks, still respectable but no longer the elite production Steelers fans have come to expect.

Of course, age and production aren't the only factors. The Steelers have historically valued legacy players, and Watt is as iconic as they come. But the business side of football doesn't always allow for sentimentality.

If Watt bounces back in 2026 and returns to his All-Pro form, Pittsburgh would likely keep him. In that case, Fowler speculates it could be Highsmith who gets moved instead. Either way, the Steelers' edge rusher room is becoming one of the most intriguing storylines to watch in the coming years.

For now, Watt remains the heart of Pittsburgh's defense. But as the NFL continues to evolve, even legends aren't always untouchable.
