NFL Insider Comments On Stefon Diggs, A.J. Brown Both Joining Patriots

The New England Patriots cut ties with Stefon Diggs this offseason, but he could still re-sign with the team as a free agent.

The NFL rumor mill is heating up with speculation that the New England Patriots could be eyeing a blockbuster receiver overhaul this offseason. After parting ways with Stefon Diggs, the team now faces an intriguing decision: bring back the veteran wideout or pivot to a new star.

Earlier this offseason, Patriots executive Eliot Wolf left the door open for Diggs' return, especially after the wide receiver was found not guilty of felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault and battery charges. However, the Patriots are reportedly only interested in a short-term, budget-friendly deal. They've already signed Romeo Doubs and are widely expected to trade for Philadelphia Eagles star A.J. Brown after June 1.

If the Patriots land Brown as many insiders anticipate, a trio of Brown, Doubs, and quarterback Drake Maye could form one of the most explosive offenses in football. But according to NFL insider Albert Breer, that scenario makes Diggs' return less likely. "Now, I believe the Patriots love Diggs, and Diggs would love to return," Breer wrote Tuesday. "But any realistic talk about his return, to me, hinges on whether the Brown trade happens. Assuming Brown does become a Patriot, I think Diggs will probably be somewhere in that one-year, $10 million range."

Breer suggested other potential landing spots for Diggs, including the Kansas City Chiefs, Washington Commanders (Diggs is from D.C.), Atlanta Falcons, and Los Angeles Rams. The Patriots' stance on Diggs has been consistent: Wolf mentioned earlier this offseason that the team could revisit a deal in case of injury, but Diggs was not a top priority. Legal issues weren't the driving factor in his release—the Patriots simply felt they could upgrade, and Brown represents that upgrade.

While fans and players alike would welcome Diggs back to New England, the odds appear slim if the Patriots finalize a trade with the Eagles for Brown. For now, the receiver market remains one of the most captivating storylines of the offseason.
