As the 2024 NFL Draft approaches, the spotlight intensifies on top prospects, with their on-field talent and off-field character under immense scrutiny. A recent report has revealed a tragic chapter in the background of one such highly-touted player, former Miami Hurricanes edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr.
According to documents obtained by The Read Optional and published Sunday, Bain was involved in a serious traffic collision in Miami in the early hours of March 17, 2024. The report states Bain was driving a 2021 Land Rover SUV that rear-ended another vehicle before veering into a concrete wall and ricocheting into a second barrier.
The crash had tragic consequences. Among the three passengers in the vehicle were two former Hurricanes teammates, Wesley Bissainthe and Nyjalik Kelly, and 22-year-old Destiny Betts. Betts sustained severe injuries and was placed in a coma for nearly three months before succumbing to her injuries on June 13, 2024.
At the time of the incident, Bain, then a sophomore at Miami, was cited for careless driving, though the charge was later dropped. The report notes that field sobriety tests were not administered at the scene.
In a statement provided to the outlet, the family of Destiny Betts addressed the tragedy, describing it as a "tragic accident" and requesting privacy as they continue to heal. "We have worked hard to find peace and move forward," the statement read, adding, "We also wish Mr. Bain the best as he continues his life and career."
This news emerges at a critical juncture for Bain, who is widely projected to be a first-round selection in this month's draft. Teams meticulously evaluate every aspect of a prospect's profile, and this development will undoubtedly be part of the conversation as franchises make their final decisions.
