The Carolina Panthers' rookie minicamp kicks off Friday at Bank of America Stadium, and all eyes will be on two NFL draft picks who already have a history of going toe-to-toe. Lee Hunter and Sam Hecht are set to rekindle the intensity they brought during Senior Bowl practices, giving Panthers brass an early look at the team's future.
Back in January, Hecht, a former Kansas State center, showcased nimble footwork and raw power to hold off Hunter, an ex-Texas Tech nose guard, during a one-on-one drill. While other offensive linemen in Mobile struggled to contain Hunter—who often bulldozed his way into the backfield, sparking debates about a potential first-round grade—Hecht managed to keep him relatively in check. Now, the question is whether that trend continues when the rookies report for the three-day event.
Hunter's standout Senior Bowl performance likely caught the attention of Panthers general manager Dan Morgan, who traded up in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft to snag the 6-foot-3, 320-pounder with the No. 49 pick. Morgan envisions the rookie run-stopper lining up alongside his NFL idol, Derrick Brown, and Tershawn Wharton or Bobby Brown II in the 3-4 base defense. During his introductory teleconference on April 24, Hunter made his mindset clear: "They came and got me. They showed love and interest. I'm ready to run through a f------ brick wall for them."
On Friday, that brick wall might just be Hecht, a fifth-round pick whom some league insiders believe could be one of the draft's smartest selections. Hecht allowed zero sacks and zero quarterback hits over 759 plays last season, with nary a penalty against him. As these two rookies renew their rivalry, Panthers fans can expect a glimpse of the grit and determination that could define Carolina's defensive line for years to come.
