NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has seen a lot of quarterbacks come and go, but even he couldn't help but be impressed by Las Vegas Raiders rookie Fernando Mendoza.
The No. 1 overall pick out of Indiana has been turning heads not just with his arm, but with his poise and maturity. And that's caught the attention of the league's top executive.
In a clip from ESPN's NFL Draft documentary "The Pick Is In," Goodell is seen watching Mendoza handle media questions and can't contain his admiration.
"This kid's like a machine," Goodell says in the footage. "He has all the right answers... but he's a genuine kid. It's real."
That kind of praise from the commissioner is rare, and it speaks volumes about Mendoza's character. Throughout his college career, he displayed the same calm demeanor under pressure, and he's carried that into the pro ranks.
Of course, being a great interview doesn't automatically translate to success on the field. Mendoza has his work cut out for him as he learns new head coach Klint Kubiak's offensive system. The rookie himself has compared the information overload to a "firehose," admitting "it's a lot."
That's the reality for any first-year quarterback. The jump from college to the NFL is massive, and even the most prepared rookies can feel overwhelmed. But if anyone has the right mindset to handle it, it's Mendoza.
The big question now is whether he'll be ready to start by Week 1. Kubiak has expressed a preference for letting rookie quarterbacks sit and learn initially, which could mean Mendoza starts the season holding a clipboard. But with the way he's handling everything thrown at him, don't be surprised if he forces the coaching staff's hand sooner rather than later.
If Mendoza can translate that poise into on-field production, the Raiders may have found not just a franchise quarterback, but a true ambassador for the game. And that's something every fan—and commissioner—can get behind.
