The San Francisco 49ers made a big splash this offseason, bringing in veteran wide receivers Mike Evans and Christian Kirk to bolster their receiving corps. With Jauan Jennings heading to free agency and Brandon Aiyuk's departure looking increasingly likely, the team needed a reliable target for quarterback Brock Purdy in 2026. They found two proven options, but one of them might not hit the milestone fans are hoping for.
Mike Evans, a six-time Pro Bowler with 866 career receptions for 13,052 yards and 108 touchdowns, has been the more accomplished of the two. He famously tied 49ers legend Jerry Rice with an incredible 11-season streak of 1,000-yard campaigns, though that run ended last year due to injury. Now entering his first season in a new uniform at age 33, the question is whether he can bounce back.
According to ESPN analyst Mike Clay's projections for the 2026 season, Evans is expected to fall short of the 1,000-yard mark once again. Clay forecasts the veteran wideout to catch 57 passes for 911 yards and six touchdowns. While those numbers would be a significant improvement over his injury-plagued 2025 campaign—where he managed just 30 receptions for 368 yards and three scores—it would still leave him shy of that historic benchmark.
That's not to say Evans won't be a key contributor. His experience and red-zone prowess could be vital for a 49ers offense looking to regain its explosive form. But at 33, Father Time is a tough opponent, and the team is preparing for some inconsistency. The hope is that the addition of Christian Kirk, second-round draft pick De'Zhaun Stribling, and a healthy Ricky Pearsall can help pick up the slack when Evans has slower games.
For now, 49ers fans will be watching closely to see if their new star can defy the projections and reclaim his 1,000-yard throne. Whether he does or not, San Francisco's revamped receiver room looks ready to make some noise in 2026.
